L'idrossido di sodio è noto anche come soda caustica, soda caustica, soda caustica, soda caustica
La soda caustica solida è una sostanza cristallina bianca. È igroscopica e si combina facilmente con l'anidride carbonica nell'aria (formando uno strato di carbonato di sodio). Conservare in contenitori ben chiusi. Si dissolve molto bene in acqua, liberando una notevole quantità di calore e formando soda caustica, cioè un liquido inodore, incolore e non infiammabile che reagisce con acidi, ossidi non metallici e idrossidi anfoteri formando sali di sodio. Ha una sensazione scivolosa e provoca ustioni. È corrosivo per i metalli, specialmente in presenza di umidità. Reagisce facilmente con metalli con proprietà anfotere liberando idrogeno (ad esempio con alluminio e zirconio formando rispettivamente alluminati e zirconati). Forma sali con acidi organici deboli (ad esempio fenoli e nitrometano). Sotto l'influenza di NaOH, i non metalli subiscono disproporzionamento (ad esempio, il fosforo bianco bollito con soluzione di NaOH produce fosfato e fosfito, e lo zolfo si dissolve in soluzione di NaOH formando solfuro e solfito).

APPLICAZIONE
La soda caustica è utilizzata come componente di preparati per la pulizia delle tubature di scarico. È anche coinvolta nella produzione di sapone, vetro d'acqua di quarzo, coloranti e seta artificiale. Inoltre, è impiegata nella produzione di gomma, nel trattamento dell'acqua per scopi industriali e nell'industria della carta.
