Coconut oil is made by pressing copra, the hard pulp of coconut palm kernels. Alongside rice, the coconut palm is one of the most important crops in the Philippines. Preserving the natural coconut flavor is possible by processing the nuts within a few days of ingestion. The resulting oil has a delicate aroma and coconut flavor, while the refined oil is free of it.

Coconut Oil - Refined or Unrefined?

Our organic shop offers a wide range of coconut oil, both refined and unrefined. Refined oil, often referred to as odorless or odorless, is pressed at a high temperature. At this temperature, this fat loses its coconut flavor and aroma, and it becomes poorer in almost all nutritional values. The advantage of the refining process, however, is that it gives it a longer shelf life and increases the smoke point, which in practice means that this fat is ideal for frying or baking. As the name suggests, the unrefined oil has not been refined. This means that it has retained all its nutritional properties and thanks to the low temperature pressing it has a nice coconut aroma and taste. Unrefined oil, also called virgin oil, should be consumed cold, meaning it should not be heated. It is ideal as an addition to fruit cocktails and gives them an exotic character. Due to its richness in nutrients, unrefined coconut oil is also widely used in cosmetics.
