Cold Brew, also kalt gebrühter Kaffee – was ist das und wie verwendet man ihn?

Contents:

Winter is already behind us and with it the short, frosty days, rain, rain and snow are over and outside the sun is starting to reign. Nature is coming to life and it is getting hotter by the day. Instead of hot coffee, we dream of a more refreshing drink. Almost all of us have heard of iced coffee, which is usually served with cream and sugar. These sweet and relatively fatty additions often make the coffee heavy rather than refreshing. That's when we can try to quench our thirst and at the same time enjoy the aroma of real coffee thanks to cold brew - that is, cold-brewed coffee.

What is cold brewed coffee?

If we prepare coffee the traditional way we know, with boiling water, it's ready in just a few minutes – the ground beans dissolve in the water, creating a thick, aromatic beverage with a stimulating power. When preparing cold brew coffee, coarsely ground coffee beans are poured over room-temperature water, or macerated. We then have to wait considerably longer than a few minutes for the beverage to be ready: about ten hours.

Properties of cold brew beverages

Macerated coffee is characterized primarily by its low acidity. Its flavor is delicate, refreshing, and slightly sweet. Although it doesn't contain as much caffeine as coffee brewed with boiling water, it has the same stimulating effect on the body and is more refreshing. At the same time, it contains more antioxidants and fewer cholesterol-raising compounds. Cold brew has a neutral pH and therefore does not affect our body's acid-base balance. This means that coffee prepared using this method is safe for people with gastrointestinal reflux or those who want to avoid over-acidification. Cold brew:

  • refreshed,
  • stimulates,
  • is easy to prepare,
  • Apart from a coffee grinder, no special accessories are required.
  • it has a delicate, acid-free taste.

Cold brewed coffee?

Cold brew is available in bottled form. It can also be made at home, although you'll have to wait a while for the beans to macerate. To make it, you'll need coffee beans, which you'll need to grind fairly coarsely. Commercially available ground coffee is too fine. Pour ground coffee (about 60 grams per 1 liter of water) into a container, preferably glass, and add room-temperature water. Cover and set aside for at least 10 to 12 hours. You can stir the beverage occasionally. After 10 hours, filter the resulting beverage into a drip coffee maker, preferably using a regular filter. Refrigerate the brewed coffee.

Cold brewed coffee has a delicate and refreshing taste and doesn't really require any unnecessary flavorings. For a change, we can also serve it with milk, plant-based drinks, caramel, or sweet maple syrup .
