The coronavirus pandemic is a top story in newspapers and on TV news. Especially now, as the fourth wave reaches its peak, everyone is searching for ways to avoid this insidious disease. Scientists are also striving to discover ways to treat COVID-19. Check out the latest research on this topic.
Nigella on Covid-19 (and not only)
Recent studies in research centers in Pakistan and Iraq have shown that black cumin seeds have a positive effect on the course of a coronavirus infection. These black seeds have become increasingly popular in Poland in recent years. Packaged seeds, black cumin oil, and sachets for preparing the infusion are available in stores. Manufacturers add them to bread, cheese, spreads, and other products.
Black cumin has been popular and valued in the Middle East for centuries. Its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antiviral properties are well known. It also has a positive effect on the body's immunity. It would take a long time to list the benefits of this black bean. Suffice it to mention that its positive effects have been observed in lowering high blood pressure, preventing cancer, supporting diabetes treatment, and in the symptomatic treatment of asthma and skin diseases such as atopic dermatitis, mycosis, and psoriasis.
For many people, the characteristic taste of black cumin is unacceptable. However, it's worth overcoming this fear because, despite its uninspiring taste and smell, the positive effects of black cumin on the human body cannot be overestimated. Recent studies also confirm the importance of black cumin for COVID-19 infection.
How do black cumin seeds affect the coronavirus?
Studies conducted in four independent research centers in Pakistan have demonstrated the positive effects of black cumin seeds The effect on the course of the coronavirus has been clearly demonstrated. Patients were given 80 mg of black cumin seeds per kilogram of body weight daily for 13 days.
Giving patients black cumin seeds has been shown to shorten the duration of coronavirus infection. In moderate cases, the duration was reduced by an average of 3 days (from 7 to 4 days), and in severe cases, by 4 days (from 13 to 9 days). The seeds were administered concurrently with standard treatment. Patients also returned to their normal activities much faster.
A very important conclusion from the study concerns patient mortality, which was significantly lower in the group receiving black seed. Among patients with severe disease who received seeds, the mortality rate was 4%, while among those who did not take black seed, the rate was almost 19%.
Does black seed oil cure Covid-19?
The Iraqi research involved giving patients black seed oil daily for two weeks in an amount of 40 mg per 1 kg of body weight. This oil appears to help prevent the symptoms of the disease from worsening. Among the patients who took the oil, there were only two such cases, while among the others, there were as many as 44. Regarding patient mortality, it was found to be over 5% in the control group, while it was over 5% in the group who took black seed oil. No one died from taking black seed oil.
Nigella – which form should you choose?
Reports of Nigella helping in the fight against coronavirus offer hope. Just in case, it's worth stocking up on seeds or oil from this plant. It certainly won't do any harm and can certainly support our immune system. However, we should keep in mind that when choosing an oil, it's best to buy it from a good health food store or pharmacy. It should contain the right concentration of beneficial essential oils. It also shouldn't be stored in hot conditions or exposed to sunlight, as this will cause it to lose its properties. Therefore, it's worth paying attention to the conditions under which it is stored in the store and whether it is packaged in a dark glass bottle.
