Why should you be interested in goji berries?
The fruits of the wolfberry (Lycium barbarum L.) are commonly known as goji berries among health food fans. These small, oblong, red fruits are a true revelation on the superfood market. Each berry contains a wealth of valuable vitamins, minerals, and substances responsible for improving skin condition, vision, digestion, and general well-being. It's worth learning about the benefits of incorporating these unassuming berries into your daily diet.
Why should you eat goji berries ?
They originate from central China and, according to long-standing tradition, are considered fruits that provide vitality and energy and even prolong life. Such revelations are best taken with a grain of salt, but there is a grain of truth in the tradition.
Goji berries - properties
Goji berries owe their properties to their high content of macro- and trace elements such as iron, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, zinc, selenium, and germanium. Their reddish color immediately indicates that goji berries are rich in polyphenol derivatives – carotenoids. They also contain amino acids and many valuable vitamins – vitamins C, E, and B. A particularly valued ingredient in goji berries, however, is the water-soluble polysaccharide complex (LBP).
Numerous studies show that this substance has a very versatile effect on the body, for example, it can influence the strengthening of the immune system and contribute to the neutralization of free radicals that are responsible for the aging processes of the body.
In addition to their strengthening and antioxidant effects, goji berries also have preventative properties—which are still being researched and subjected to numerous tests. So far, goji berries have been found to have inhibitory properties regarding the development of unwanted cells in the human stomach, lungs, and colon, as well as in the prostate and breast.
Goji berries - effects
Goji berries influence many processes in the body. The cyperone, betaine, and LBP complex contained in the berries influences the functioning of the circulatory system, helping to maintain good blood vessel function and prevent the occurrence of heart defects. Carotenoids and lutein contribute to the protection of the eyes from the harmful effects of UV radiation. The effects of LBP on people with blood sugar problems are currently being researched. It is recognized that goji berries can contribute to an increase in insulin resistance, which contributes to a reduction in insulin resistance.
Health food manufacturers often advertise goji berries as an ingredient that supports the process of gradual weight loss. In fact, the fruit has no proven effect on accelerating the breakdown of body fat, but it does have a fairly good effect on accelerating metabolism, which in turn can contribute to weight loss.
The properties of these unusual fruits will undoubtedly encourage you to include them in your daily diet. However, it's worth remembering that, as with any new dietary ingredient, the effects of goji berries on the body can vary greatly. In Poland, blueberries are available only in dried form, eliminating the risk of consuming unripe fruits. However, it's worth paying attention to the origin of goji berries—how they were stored, whether they are intact, and whether they contain preservatives.
It's also important to follow the recommended daily fruit intake of 5-12 berries. Exceeding this amount can sometimes lead to difficulty falling asleep.
