Nigella - what is it?

Nigella [Latin: Nigella sativa] is a plant widespread in Southeastern Europe and Western Asia. The raw material of the herb is its small, black, oily seeds. Their aroma, when rubbed, somewhat resembles oregano. Cumin is a seed plant belonging to the buttercup family. Its peculiarity is the characteristic blue flowers that often decorate garden beds and enrich flower bouquets. However, it gained worldwide fame through its seeds, which are used as a spice and medicinal raw material. They are hidden in the so-called bladder and are sometimes called black cumin because of their appearance and taste.

Cumin - culinary use

Nigella seeds are characterized by a spicy, slightly bitter-pungent taste that lies between that of poppy and pepper. Interestingly, cumin can serve as a pepper substitute in cooking for people with sensitive stomachs, as this plant does not irritate the mucous membranes. For this reason, cumin, like pepper, has a very rich culinary application. It perfectly enhances the flavor of meats such as mutton, lamb, game, or poultry. It enriches a variety of vegetable dishes made from cabbage, zucchini, or other fried vegetables. Recently, it has become especially popular as an addition to white cheese. So be sure to try a good Korycin cheese with this wonderful spice! Not to forget is cumin oil, which, besides its numerous medicinal properties, can enhance the flavor of many dishes.

Tips

• Store it in airtight containers. For this reason, each of our spice packages is equipped with a zipper that makes closing and opening easier. Nigella in ordinary foil not only loses its beautiful aroma very quickly after opening but can also easily fall out of the packaging, for example, into a drawer or cupboard. Your convenience is important to us!
• When handling cumin oil, remember that it should only be used cold! It must not be heated under any circumstances.
