The tomato is a plant in the nightshade family that is native to western South America. It was brought to Europe by the expeditions of Christopher Columbus in the 15th century.
Tomatoes are among the healthiest fruits and vegetables. They are a veritable treasure trove of vitamins and minerals, including: vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin K, vitamin PP, B vitamins, iron, copper, magnesium and iodine. Due to the high water content, they perfectly quench thirst and moisturize. Tomato fruits are a rich source of antioxidants that help the body fight to maintain health and beauty. 100 g of tomatoes provide only 18 kcal.
A tomato is not only an excellent ingredient in salads and sandwiches. It also goes well with meat and pasta, as an addition to sauces and soups.
