Spirulina is a microscopic alga that grows in the lake waters of Africa and Central and South America. It contains up to 60% protein in its composition. It is a source of natural iodine, selenium, iron, valuable B vitamins (B1, B2, B3, B6, B12) and unsaturated fatty acids. The protein it contains consists of up to 18 amino acids, 8 of which are esogenic amino acids, i.e. those that are not produced by the body and must be supplied with food. Due to its high-quality protein, spirulina is popular with vegan and vegetarian diets.
Iron, the source of which is spirulina, plays a role in the body's transport of oxygen to cells. It is also involved in the production of red blood cells and hemoglobin and supports the proper functioning of the immune system. It is worth noting that the iron from this alga is better absorbed than the iron of animal origin.
Iodine is involved in maintaining normal cognitive and nervous system function and helps maintain healthy skin. Selenium helps maintain healthy hair and nails, supports the proper functioning of the immune system and thyroid, and protects cells from oxidative stress.
Vitamin B6, found in Spirulina, helps maintain proper energy-yielding metabolism and aids in proper red blood cell production. It helps reduce fatigue and helps maintain normal mental functions. Vitamin B12 helps in the functioning of the nervous and immune systems.
Spirulina has two types of pigments, green chlorophyll, blue phycocyanin, and such antioxidants as beta-carotene and vitamin E. Thanks to them, it has antioxidant and cleansing properties.
