Diatomaceous earth is a naturally occurring soft sedimentary rock. It consists primarily of silica and the shells of single-celled algae. It is a substance mined in only a few locations in Poland—near Poznań, Łódź, and Augustów. It comes in two varieties—industrial and food. Edible diatomaceous earth is said to have many medicinal properties. Let's look at why and when we should use it.
Properties of diatomaceous earth
Diatomaceous earth in food form dissolves in the stomach and converts into orthosilicic acid, which is easily absorbed by our bodies. Diatomaceous earth is a source of minerals such as:
- Silicon,
- Calcium,
- Magnesium ,
- Iron,
- Sodium,
- Manganese,
- Copper,
- Boron.
Use of diatomaceous earth
Diatomaceous earth has detoxifying properties. First, it supports the process of cleansing the body of toxins, unnecessary deposits, and heavy metals. Because it consists of hard and sharp particles, it acts like a sponge, mechanically cleansing the digestive system. This allows us to get rid of parasites, viruses, mold, and other harmful microbes without damaging the intestinal walls. It is also well-suited to supporting the treatment of conditions such as:
- Caries,
- Arteriosclerosis,
- Osteoporosis,
- Diabetes,
- Hypertension,
- Overweight,
- unpleasant smell from the mouth
Thanks to its high mineral content, especially silicon, consuming diatomaceous earth can also have a positive effect on the condition of our hair, skin, and nails. A body cleansed of toxins functions more efficiently, is less susceptible to potential infections, and more resistant to stress and its effects. When used regularly, diatomaceous earth is a natural detoxifier, thus protecting the body and preventing many diseases.
Diatomaceous earth – possible side effects
Although diatomaceous earth is a relatively safe and easily absorbed substance, as with any dietary supplement, special care must be taken. First, if we want to use it as a dietary supplement, only diatomaceous earth labeled as suitable for human consumption is suitable. It's also important to remember that it has a powerful detoxifying effect on the body, and any process of cleansing the body of toxins can be associated with unpleasant side effects, such as:
- severe headaches,
- temporary weakness of the body,
- Nausea and stomach problems.
How do you use diatomaceous earth?
Diatomaceous earth can be found in powder or tablet form. Always use diatomaceous earth according to the manufacturer's instructions on the package insert. It's very important to carry plenty of water with you, regardless of the form of supplement you take. Due to its ability to bind water, diatomaceous earth can contribute to dehydration. Therefore, we should remember to drink at least 2 liters of water daily during treatment.
