Simple sugars include fructose (fruit), glucose, and galactose. They are characterized by the fact that they are digested very quickly by our bodies, which immediately deprives them of energy, which we use for a short time. "Incidentally," blood sugar levels rise. Such properties make simple sugars less valuable to the body, less satiating, which is why we feel hungry more quickly, which means we eat and burn more calories.

Complex sugars, however, are a slightly different story. These include glycogen and starch. They differ from simple sugars in that they take longer to digest, and we therefore extract energy from them for longer. While they also raise blood sugar, they do so much less than simple sugars.

This doesn't mean that simple sugars, or monosaccharides, are bad. You have to use them wisely. For example, if we train a lot, it's worth ingesting simple sugars after training, as our body needs a higher dose of them at that time.
