While oil and hair aren't a great combination (greasy hair, yuck!), an oil treatment can be the solution to most of your hair and scalp problems. There are many ways you can use different types of oils and oils to make your hair look better than ever.
Essential oils have been used in beauty care for thousands of years. We all know that incorporating them into our daily diet—especially in their natural form, such as nuts, avocados, or high-fat dairy products—has very positive effects on our health, but only recently have we returned to the traditional method of using natural oils, applying them to our hair and skin. Oiling our hair is particularly popular: But what's behind it, and what results can it produce?
Why is it worth applying oil to your hair?
We usually do everything we can to keep our hair as light as possible: We use shampoos and conditioners almost daily, designed to encourage our hair to reduce its natural sebum secretion. Regular, aggressive (just look at the ingredients in most shampoos, full of irritating detergents!) deprivation of this natural protective layer leaves hair rough and dull, and the scalp irritated and flaky.
Even worse, such a "scratched" hairstyle becomes greasy much faster because the sebum-depleted skin tries with increased intensity to make up for what it has lost. Oils can help repair this damage by restoring your scalp's natural balance and making your hair smooth, shiny, and manageable again. And, paradoxically, they significantly reduce its lubrication.
How to choose a hair oil?
You've probably noticed that there are many different types of hair oils on the market. Almost all of them can be applied to the hair, but some are better than others! For dry, color-treated, and damaged hair, the best oils are avocado oil , which has wonderful moisturizing properties, and argan oil, which has become very popular recently.
Thin, weakened, and falling hair can benefit from a treatment with castor oil. And owners of virtually any hair type can use coconut oil (Warning: unrefined!) or sweet almond oil. Oils can be mixed—and it's worth it—to create your own compositions, individually tailored to the needs of your hairstyle.
Oiling hair
There are two popular ways to oil your hair. First, apply a little oil to your hands (be careful not to overdo it: for long hair, about a tablespoon should be enough!) and gradually spread it over the entire length of dry, unwashed hair. The hair doesn't need to be drenched in oil: it's enough to show that it's covered! After oiling, protect your hair with a bathing cap or wrap. You can cover your hair with a hat or wrap it in a towel: heat will enhance the beneficial effects of the oil.
After at least one hour (longer is better; the oil can also be left in the hair overnight), wash and condition your hair as usual. The second method, the "bowl method," involves filling a bowl with warm water, pouring in oil (in a similar amount to the first method), stirring, and immersing your hair in the resulting emulsion. After thoroughly coating your hair with water and oil, squeeze out excess water and style as with the first method. Wash and condition your hair after one hour.
The most important thing: effects!
If you're planning to embark on your hair oiling adventure, remember that regularity and consistency are key. Oiling isn't one of those methods that delivers instant results: patience is key! For best results, oil your hair before every shampoo for at least a few weeks. Your hair will be soft, shiny, smooth, and well-nourished.
