Bambus-Schneidebrett – wie pflege ich es und warum lohnt es sich, es zu verwenden?

One of the most commonly used kitchen accessories is the cutting board. It's useful when preparing any meal, whether breakfast, lunch, or dinner. While its primary function is to protect the kitchen countertop from scratches and damage, it doesn't have to be its only purpose. If the board is properly crafted and cared for, it can also be used as a table decoration and as a tray for serving items such as cheese, cold cuts, or fruit.

Types of cutting boards

Boards made of various materials are available in stores: wood, plastic, stone, and even glass. The selection is endless and can be overwhelming. When it comes to cutting boards, plastic is considered a hygienic material because it absorbs fewer juices and odors than wood, and it's also easy to wash and keep clean. However, everyone knows today that it's not an environmentally friendly material, and if we're trying to choose eco-friendly products for the home, then a plastic board is not an option. Wood is certainly a biodegradable material, but wooden boards are quite difficult to keep clean; they absorb all odors and are relatively heavy. Although glass boards don't absorb odors and are easy to clean, they can dull knives and, of course, break. One product that's also environmentally friendly, lightweight, and easy to clean is the bamboo cutting board . Available relatively recently, it has become a real hit.

Features of a bamboo cutting board – why is it worth using?

Because a bamboo cutting board looks like a wooden board at first glance, many people assume that bamboo boards are also made of wood. However, bamboo is a plant species with strong, woody stems – an environmentally friendly material that grows very quickly (as much as one meter per day). To make bamboo boards, very tightly compressed, crosswise arranged stems are used. Thanks to this method, harmful adhesives and other substances are not required. Because the structure of the bamboo board is very compact, no water or other liquids penetrate, thus preventing the development of bacteria. It is also environmentally friendly, lightweight, and handy, which is something that older people especially appreciate. Bamboo cutting board :

  • it is harder than a wooden board,
  • dries very quickly,
  • it is ecological, lightweight, durable and hygienic,
  • resistant to moisture and odor penetration,
  • you can cut meat, cheese, bread, vegetables and fruit on it,
  • does not blunt knives,
  • it is resistant to damage and very high temperatures.

How do I care for a bamboo cutting board so it lasts as long as possible? Waterproofing and washing

Caring for everyday items so they last as long as possible is in line with the principles of the zero-waste philosophy—the principles of living in harmony with nature and not wasting what we have. To ensure a bamboo cutting board lasts for a long time, do not wash it in the dishwasher or soak it in water for long periods. Instead of chemical cleaners that are harmful to health and the environment, it's worth using natural cleaning agents for washing—wash with lemon, soda, or vinegar, and then rinse with water. After washing, stand it upright so it drains from the water, or wipe it immediately with a clean, dry cloth.

A bamboo cutting board should be properly impregnated for additional protection against moisture and damage. To do this, simply rub any cooking oil onto the board. Wait at least 12 hours after oiling before using the cutting board. This process should be repeated regularly, for example, every two months. Then it will be properly protected and will serve us for many years.

A very practical and convenient solution is a bamboo cutting board with a tray . The extendable tray is useful, for example, when we want to transfer vegetables from the board to the pot or when we need to throw peels and leftovers in the trash.

However, a bamboo cutting board made of natural materials is not only practical, universal and at the same time not harmful to the environment, but also looks so impressive that we can successfully use it for serving snacks at parties, family gatherings, etc., as well as on a daily basis.
