How do I care for the skin of my hands and nails?
Hand care is important because this part of our body is devoid of sebaceous glands, which produce a natural protective barrier in the form of sebum. Skin without natural protection is extremely exposed to external influences. That's why it's so important to regularly moisturize your hands. Choose cosmetics that don't contain unnecessary preservatives, dyes, or artificial fragrances. Ingredients worth paying attention to when choosing a hand cream with moisturizing, regenerating, smoothing, and strengthening the protective barrier include:
- Vitamin E,
- Ceramides,
- Urea,
- Trehalose,
- Panthenol,
- Oils, e.g. jojoba, macadamia
- Shea butter,
- Hyaluronic acid.
Washing hands
Frequent handwashing, while obviously important and necessary, also contributes to excessive hand dryness, so pay attention to a few points during this activity: Use mild soaps, free of SLES and SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate), because this ingredient is irritating and drying. Frostbitten hands should not be washed under hot running water, as this will further dry and irritate them. Washed hands must be thoroughly dried with a delicate towel, remembering not to let them remain wet.
Hand scrub
Don't forget to wear protective gloves when cleaning the house, especially when using detergents. Exfoliation will also be an element of hand care. When performing a full-body scrub, we often forget about our hands. Firstly, it provides a great massage and relaxation for busy, tired hands, and secondly, it prepares the skin of our hands for the application of a cream, serum, or regenerating mask. The simplest and certainly most effective scrub to make at home is an oil-sugar scrub, to which you can also add a little honey. Coconut oil combined with coarsely ground coffee also works. This scrub perfectly removes dead skin, smoothes it, and reduces roughness. However, do not use it if the skin is chapped, reddened, or irritated.
Soothing hand bath - Home SPA
A hand bath can become a relaxing, nurturing ritual for your home. Just 20 minutes is enough for a soothing bath for your hands. All you need is warm water and your chosen additive. It could be:
- Bath with chamomile and lemon,
- Bath with chamomile and some warm milk,
- linseed bath,
- bathe in herbs rich in vitamins - A, C and E, for example with the addition of calendula.
Nail repair
Nail care is also a very important part of hand care. Their condition and appearance can signal important changes in the body. Regular care of our nails is very important. How do we make them stronger, healthier, and more beautiful?
- Don’t forget to drink enough water – without sufficient hydration, nails become brittle and fragile,
- Pay attention to what you eat – your diet should be varied and nutrient-rich. A lack of important vitamins and minerals can lead to deterioration in our bodies, including our nails. The nail plate is strengthened primarily by iron and vitamin B2 .
- Take a biotin supplement – it's a B vitamin, and because it's water-soluble, the body doesn't store it. Biotin strengthens not only nails but also hair.
- Try to limit contact with water, especially very hot water - long and frequent soaking in water can make nails weak and brittle, so it's worth wearing gloves when cleaning the house, washing the bathroom, or washing dishes.
- Choose the right natural cosmetic nail polishes and cosmetics
- When removing nail polish, it is best to avoid using a remover containing acetone, as this can damage the nail plate,
- Don't forget cuticle care. Nail care also includes regenerating the cuticles around the nails. Various types of natural oils are particularly suitable for this. For example, unrefined argan oil – you can massage it directly into the nails and cuticles, or soak it in slightly heated oil for a few minutes. You can also use unrefined raspberry seed oil and even regular rapeseed or sunflower oil, which are used daily in the kitchen and are both rich in vitamin E. Tea tree oil helps with nail fungus.
Proper care of the skin on hands and nails is essential if we want to prevent excessive dryness and irritation, as well as brittle nails. Especially on cold days, our hands need a good cream that forms a protective hydrolipidic layer on the skin. However, hand cream is not all you can do. Make caring for not only your body but also your hands and nails a daily habit. Let's not forget a healthy diet rich in minerals such as calcium, iron, silicon, zinc and magnesium, as well as vitamins A, E, C and B, and drinking the right amount of water.
