Why is lutein so important during pregnancy?
Progesterone, or lutein in other words, is a hormone that is very important for a healthy and safe pregnancy. It can happen that the mother's body lacks natural lutein. This can pose a risk to the fetus. In such cases, the woman is advised to take the appropriate dose of lutein prescribed by her doctor.
As we already know, lutein is a sex hormone. It is produced by the corpus luteum in the ovary and by the placenta during pregnancy. The adrenal cortex and the central nervous system are also involved in the production process.
Why is lutein so important for pregnant women?
It's worth knowing the functions of lutein during pregnancy. These include:
- Preparation of the uterine lining for implantation, i.e., the implantation of a fertilized egg. Lutein makes the membrane better supplied with blood and thicker,
- Lutein is responsible for maintaining pregnancy until the formation of the placenta,
- It is also responsible for stopping uterine contractions, i.e. preventing miscarriages or premature births.
Interestingly, during a nine-month pregnancy, the level of progesterone, or lutein, increases almost 100-fold. This decrease in the hormone can only be noticed before birth; as a result of this decrease, stronger contractions occur, which means that labor begins.
Cause lutein deficiency?
The consequences of a lutein deficiency are very serious. Remember that lutein is responsible for maintaining pregnancy and its proper development. A deficiency of this hormone increases the risk of miscarriage. If a pregnant woman experiences symptoms such as spotting and pain in the lower abdomen, her doctor often recommends taking a special form of lutein, usually in tablet form. Lutein is also used in later stages of pregnancy when there is a risk of premature birth. In these cases, the hormone is administered by injection or vaginal tablet.
Therefore, it is very important to regularly monitor lutein levels in the body. This allows us to rest more calmly and be sure that hormone levels are adequate. However, if there is a lack of lutein in the body, it can be successfully supplemented with tablets recommended by a doctor.
