Essential oils to feel good

Ätherische Öle zum Wohlfühlen

The sense of smell is perhaps the most underrated of all the senses. It seems that in times when we no longer have to worry about food poisoning at every meal (which we had to sniff out every time in our primitive past), it's no longer of any use to us.

In fact, however, smells affect us in many subtle ways: some calm us, others stimulate us, still others evoke pleasant memories or unpleasant associations... The practical application of knowledge about the effects and properties of scents is called aromatherapy and can help us in many, often surprising ways.

What are essential oils ?

Contrary to what their name suggests, oils are rarely truly greasy. Rather, they resemble a pure liquid—something like the essence extracted from the plant. They are obtained through distillation and are therefore very concentrated: This is why peppermint oil, for example, smells stronger than fresh mint. Sometimes essential oils are dissolved in different oils (e.g., sweet almond oil, coconut oil) to create a blend that both smells pleasant and has a beneficial effect on skin, hair, or nails. However, people with very sensitive skin should not do this: essential oils can be irritating when applied topically. In such a situation, it is better to limit yourself to sniffing!

Which oils are worth using?

Our organic shop offers a very large selection of essential oils of various types, which naturally raises the question: How do they differ and what are their uses? We've selected some of the most popular oils for you: See how you can use them in different ways!

Lavender oil

It's loved by anyone who struggles with stress and can't sleep at night. With the muscle-relaxing magnesium Epsom salt, you can add a few drops to a hot bath for effective relaxation. It doesn't even have to be a full bath: simply soak your feet in this mixture! You can also sprinkle the oil on your sheets just before bedtime: the calming, floral, and herbal scent of lavender will lull you to sleep.

Tea tree oil

It has a strong disinfectant effect, which is why it has long been recommended for people with acne. A bath with this oil is also beneficial for people who suffer from unpleasant foot odor. Diffusing tea tree oil (using a diffuser, a fireplace, or home remedies such as boiling water in a pot with the oil and letting it steam) can also provide relief for those with colds, sinus problems, or coughs.

Rosemary oil

This powerful oil, with its intense herbal and forest oil scent, provides an energy boost for anyone feeling a bit sluggish, struggling to concentrate, or constantly feeling faint. For this reason, however, it's best not to spray it in the evening—its stimulating properties can make it difficult to fall asleep. It's worth adding a few drops to your homemade mouthwash.

Peppermint oil

Mint is famous for its positive effects on the digestive system—and that's exactly what you can expect from peppermint oil. Inhaling its vapors relieves stomach aches, helps with indigestion, and can help control nausea. Like its cousin rosemary, peppermint oil also helps with waking up and concentration: It can be a coffee alternative!

Clove oil

Cloves have been used as a remedy for toothaches for thousands of years—so if you have a problem with your teeth or gums, this oil can help! It has mild antiseptic properties, which is why it can also be used to make household cleaners—as we wrote in our previous post.
