Health benefits of white sage
Contents:
White sage is used as an incense in aromatherapy for pain relief and, according to traditional beliefs, for cleansing rooms of bad energy. Its use aims, among other things, to improve well-being and general health. In fact, the leaves of this plant contain essential oils with properties that, when smoked, affect our bodies. From a scientific point of view, it is thanks to these substances that it owes its healing properties. White sage , also called Indian sage, grows naturally only in California and Mexico. Let's see how to use this incense and whether it really has a positive effect on our health.
White Sage – Properties
Native Americans believed that white sage, among other things, helped with colds, acted as a diuretic, and had calming effects. In fact, some of this plant's properties have now been scientifically confirmed. Sage works:
- antibacterial
- antimicrobial
- anti-inflammatory,
- Repel insects,
- makes it easier to fall asleep,
- calms, soothes and relieves nervous tension.
White sage can also be helpful in aromatherapy for relieving pain and nausea, reducing stress symptoms, and improving overall well-being. Many tribes—Sheyeni, Comanche, Nwaho, and Arapaho—still consider it a sacred plant. It is used as an aid in meditation and yoga practices.
House cleaning with sage
According to traditional Indian belief, white sage has the power to remove bad energy from rooms and people who feel irritable or anxious. How do you perform such a cleansing ritual? Light the top of the incense stick and then immediately extinguish the flame—then the sage will begin to smoke. In the room where we use incense sticks, the window must be open to ensure access to fresh air. Furthermore, it is believed that negative energy also leaves the house with smoke. To take precautions when smudging rooms, it is recommended to hold a fireproof bowl in one hand onto which you can sprinkle ashes, or to set aside incense sticks for use as needed. Glowing ashes should not fall to the floor. Under no circumstances should you leave a burning sage out of sight. After smudging the house, the sage should be completely extinguished by pressing it against the sides of the vessel or into a container of sand until it stops smoking. White sage should not be extinguished with water (except in emergency situations), as it will be difficult to re-ignite.
Studies have confirmed that white sage stimulates mental functions and has a soothing effect on depression. According to traditional beliefs, burning this incense is said to free us from heavy, negative energy that can drain our strength and joy. Smoke alleviates conditions such as stress, anxiety, and depression. When used as an aid in practices like meditation or yoga, sage helps calm the mind, relax muscles, and positively influence our well-being. However, if we are skeptical about sage's purifying properties, we can use it to remove unwanted insects or microbes from the home, especially since its scent is pleasant—slightly sweet and spicy.
