Melissa - oder nur zur Beruhigung? Prüfen Sie, womit Zitronenmelisse-Aufguss sonst noch helfen kann

First and foremost, lemon balm is brewed when we want to calm ourselves, soothe, and soothe slightly frightened nerves. While the plant has these properties, this isn't the only benefit of lemon balm. It turns out that the popular "soothing" has many other valuable properties as well.

Melissa officinalis – what is it actually?

Lemon balm is a small, green plant. It grows up to 60 cm tall and has densely packed leaves that resemble mint leaves. Light yellow flowers bloom where the leaves meet the stem. Lemon balm has different names in different regions—rojownik, motherwort, beekeeper, lemon herb, or old man. Lemon balm is valued worldwide for its flavor, but also for its calming properties. The most common way to consume lemon balm is as an aromatic infusion, but the plant is also used in liqueurs, and the leaves are added to salads and marinades, sauces, stews, and even sandwiches. It is a widely used plant in herbal medicine. Wild plantations of lemon balm can be found in Morocco, Tunisia, Madeira, Western Asia, and Southern Europe. Today, however, it is cultivated throughout the world, including Poland.

Why is Melissa so popular?

Its natural properties are responsible for its popularity. The essential oil contained in the plant's leaves, containing components such as citral and citronellal, lowers the sensitivity threshold of the nervous system, has antibacterial properties, and relaxes smooth intestinal muscles. The tannins contained in lemon balm also have antibacterial properties.

What else does lemon balm contain:

  • Flavonoids - have an antioxidant effect,
  • Vitamin C - supports the body's immunity,
  • Phenolic acids – have an anti-inflammatory effect,
  • Mucus - protects the mucous membranes of the upper respiratory tract.

Melissa for concentration and calming, but not only

The most well-known properties of lemon balm are its calming effect and its ability to improve concentration and memory. The plant is also used for headaches and can also relieve migraine pain. Lemon balm leaves stimulate the secretion of gastric juice, which means they have properties that help the body digest even heavy foods. If you have cholesterol problems, regularly drinking lemon balm infusion can have a positive effect on cholesterol levels.

  • Anxiety, restlessness, nervousness,
  • cardiac arrhythmias,
  • anxiety disorder,
  • Insomnia,
  • indigestion,
