Unlike many other mammals, the human body does not produce vitamin C – ascorbic acid – itself. We must obtain it from food, and because of its properties, this is not as easy as it seems!
Vitamin C is highly unstable (its amount in food decreases significantly over time) and is not resistant to high and low temperatures. At the same time, it is one of the most important vitamins, and a deficiency leads to a number of very serious diseases: from gingivitis to general immune deficiency and anemia to the very dangerous scurvy. A sufficiently high dose of this vitamin in our diet is therefore crucial for our health.
Vitamin C in food
Probably everyone knows that citrus fruits are a rich source of vitamin C: lemons, oranges, tangerines, and others. However, there are some foods that contain much more of it—something few people know! These include such well-known fruits and vegetables as peppers, parsley, strawberries, and broccoli—as well as the main character of this text, the exotic and mysterious acerola.
Acerola: What is it eaten with?
Acerola—or more precisely, Malpigia, as that is its actual botanical name—is a small shrub or tree. It bears small but exquisite fruits that, in appearance and flavor, are somewhat reminiscent of our local cherries (although acerola is not related to them at all!). Malpigia's culinary uses are also similar: it is eaten raw or baked in various cakes, as well as in the form of ice cream, candies, and other sweets. The truly spectacular results of consuming acerola can be achieved by eating it raw or in the form of a properly prepared extract. In terms of vitamin C concentration, acerola ranks second in the world, just after the camu fruit.
Vitamin C from Acerola: Why is it worth it?
Acerola supplements, such as those offered in our organic shop , are a source of natural, easily digestible vitamin C, but also contain other nutrients essential to our health. They therefore impact our health comprehensively and on many levels.
- Neutralize aging-accelerating free radicals: Vitamin C is one of the most powerful antioxidants in food! It helps us stay healthy and... youthful longer!
- In autumn and winter, when we're more likely to catch colds, we need to pay particular attention to maintaining a high level of immunity. Vitamin C plays a very important role in this, as it stimulates the production of white blood cells, our body's "shield."
- Providing the body with the right dose of vitamin C helps keep joints healthy for a long time. This vitamin is responsible for stimulating the collagen production process, the presence of which is essential for joint strength and resilience. Therefore, a vitamin C deficiency can manifest as inflammation!
