Kimchi is a traditional Korean dish that has become increasingly popular in Europe, including Poland, in recent years. Kimchi is made from fermented vegetables. The most common are Chinese cabbage, beets, and cucumbers, but in fact, depending on the region, there can be more than a hundred varieties. Onions, garlic, and chilies are also added to the dish, which gives kimchi a really spicy flavor. The end result is a dish with a characteristic salty, sour-sweet, and spicy taste. In Poland, we can buy ready-made kimchi, which usually comes in jars. Let's look at why this particular snack is worth trying .

Health-promoting properties of a traditional Korean dish

Kimichi is considered one of the healthiest dishes in the world due to its high content of valuable nutrients. Since it is a fermented product, it contains so-called healthy lactic acid bacteria, i.e., Lactobacillus, which, among other things, inhibit the development of pathogenic bacteria, regulate intestinal function, and support the proper functioning of the digestive system. In addition, kimchi is a source of selenium, vanillin, iron and phosphorus, fiber, vitamins A, C, B vitamins, and beta-carotene. As a result, eating kimchi has a beneficial effect on:

  • Vision – thanks to the high content of vitamin A (100 g of kimchi covers 18% of the daily requirement of this vitamin, which is necessary for the proper functioning of vision),
  • Lowering LDL cholesterol thanks to the content of selenium and allicin,
  • Slimming process – Kimchi is a filling dish, provides many valuable vitamins, minerals and fiber and is also low in calories,
  • the work of the digestive system: For example, it inhibits the growth of Helicobacter pylori bacteria and can also reduce the degree of fatty liver,
  • Hair and nails – thanks to the high selenium content,
  • Immune system – thanks to the content of lactic acid bacteria and probiotics.

Kimchi – ideas for everyday use in the kitchen

Before trying this Korean delicacy for the first time, you should at least be familiar with kimchi . Because it's a healthy and low-calorie dish, it shouldn't be eaten by people suffering from digestive disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome, reflux, or stomach ulcers.

Traditional Korean fermented cabbage can be a delicious and healthy snack on its own, but kimchi can also be successfully used in other dishes, such as filling dumplings, pancakes, tortillas , or hamburgers. Chicken fried rice with kimchi is a perfect accompaniment. Using this fermented cabbage, you can successfully make a spicy, warming soup. Kimchi also goes well with fish, especially herring. Koreans also add it to scrambled eggs. We can also simply use it as a side dish with bread. Kimchi can easily spice up our everyday cooking. An interesting fact is that the traditional method of kimchi preparation was added to the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2013.
