Wie bringt man Kindern die Grundprinzipien der Ökologie bei?

Climate changes, which have long been observed and studied by scientists around the world, could impact the quality of life of future generations. Therefore, ecological education for young people is already emerging as one of the most important areas of science. Without a shared awareness of the importance of caring for the environment and how its condition greatly impacts our lives, there will be no changes in society's mentality, and ecological behavior will not be taken for granted.

That's why we teach our children from a young age what ecology is and how we can take care of the environment on a daily basis. If our toddlers are taught to respect nature from the beginning, reflexes like properly separating waste or turning off the water while brushing their teeth become natural.

Explain to your child what ecology is

The simplest definition is that ecology is the study of nature, which is our common home, and we ourselves are part of the surrounding environment. The natural environment includes the surrounding meadows, forests, rivers and lakes, as well as the air in cities and villages—everything that surrounds us. Here are some simple ideas for teaching your children to be environmentally friendly.

Create a home garden with your child

Whether you live in an apartment building or a single-family home, you can grow plants anywhere. All a child needs is some soil, a pot or box, and seeds to plant a plant and begin caring for it. This way, the child learns responsibility, how to care for flowers, and what needs to be done to ensure they grow well and bloom beautifully. If you have a garden, you can try planting wildflowers and plants in it to attract bees and butterflies in the summer and to provide a haven for insects in the winter.

A birdhouse can be placed on the balcony.

Go for a walk in nature with your child

One of the best ways to learn is through experience. Whether you live in the country or in the city, take your child out into nature. Even a toddler can learn a lot about nature in a city park. Try to tell your child as much as possible about the animals and plants they encounter. Also, remember not to show fear or disgust towards certain animals, such as frogs, earthworms, or spiders, so as not to alienate the child from nature. Instead, try to explain that these are useful creatures.

Set a good example

Since children learn best and fastest by observing adults, we ourselves must set a positive example for them. Therefore, we should act ecologically ourselves and explain at every opportunity why we act in a certain way, for example, why we:

  • Separate waste,
  • Remember to turn off the lights and water.
  • Avoid plastic straws and opt for paper straws .
  • Go shopping with your own bag ,
  • use reusable water bottles that we fill with water or other drinks at home instead of buying drinks in plastic bottles,
  • Eat healthy, fresh vegetables and fruits, natural foods from proven sources, instead of processed foods packaged in plastic.

Let's also not forget the helpful books and fairy tales on topics related to ecology and environmental protection. If we raise a child to follow the rules of a life in harmony with nature, they will grow up to be responsible and compassionate people who care about the things that are important to them.
